Austin, Texas summers are full of fun! From stand up paddle boarding on the river to Blues on the Green concerts at Zilker. There is much fun to be had all summer long. When you get home from your summertime adventure you will probably want to wind down. The perfect way to end a long summer day is to relax next to one of many Outdoor Fires.
According to the American Society of Landscape Architects, outdoor fire pits are the number one requested design feature for homes today. Something about an outdoor fire brings a lot of joy and relaxation, even during the warmer months. People are either having firepits and outdoor fireplaces installed or taking the DIY route so they too can enjoy this desirable feature.
And if you live in Texas, chances are you will be having outdoor fireside chats well into October. There is nothing like an outdoor fire with adirondack chairs around it to bring family and friends closer together. If you have already constructed your firepit and are looking to order firewood, here are a few questions we can answer before you place your order.
First and foremost you need to ask yourself: How many outdoor fires are you going to have per week? Will you have them on most weekends between now and the end of October? If that is the case, you will probably be having between 15-30 fires that may last for a few hours each time.
One of the advantages of ordering Woodchuck Delivery logs is the moisture level is low and it is truly ready to burn. You could order a half face cord (link), which is equivalent to about 25 bundles, and that should get you through the season. However, one of the benefits of our firewood is it is you can order it when you need it and the new order will be equally burnable when it arrives. So, if you wanted to order in smaller increments over the summer season, that would be totally fine!
You need to keep the logs off the ground, under cover (such as a garage), and in an area that allows maximum airflow to the logs from all sides. This helps keep the wood dry and helps it continue seasoning until you are ready to use it!
You may also consider storing the firewood in an area where it is convenient for delivery and is easily accessible from your fire pit location. Our firewood racks are perfect for this! We have racks that can store anywhere from an 1/8 cord to a full cord.
When starting a fire, make sure you get rid of some of the old ash from past fires. If there are unburned logs in the pit, move them aside. Take crumpled paper and place it in the center of the pit or try one of these other firestarters! Then place some small kindling on top. Light the fire with a long match or firestarter. Once the kindling has started to burn, add your logs and sit back and enjoy the ambiance of the evening!

Now is the perfect time to cook around your fire pit. From hosting a pool party to roasting marshmallows with your kids at night, here is what you need to make this unique cooking experience.
A collapsible grill with 4 legs is a great device for cooking with skillets and pots as displayed in the photo above.
When you set up this 3-legged stand over the firepit, you are set to suspend pots and roasts from the center chains.
This classic cooking pot can have your meat, potatoes and vegetables in it. For the best heating, it should be buried in the hot coals from the fire pit which will create a total oven effect.
Cast iron has many benefits, but the best one is durability. Once you invest in cast iron, these pots and pans literally last a lifetime. In addition, cast iron can withstand high heat and provide even heat transfer of the items in the skillet or pot – even if the fire is not even.
Cast iron skillets should be 10-12 inches in diameter and have lid. Pots should be at least have a 4 quart capacity and a durable, heat resistant handle. You will need to have fireproof oven mitts to handle the skillet and pots over the fire pit.
If you need to turn things over or mix them around in the skillet or dutch oven, you want a handle long enough that it won’t get too hot over the fire. In addition, if you a making stew or chili over the tripod, a serving spoon is a must. Purchase ones that have Teflon coating, as metal ones can damage your cookware.
Perfect for putting firm vegetables and meats onto and grilling them on the open flame. Give them to your guests and let them cook their own meat!
When holding a family cookout or party, giving everyone a fork to cook hot dogs and brats is a wonderful way to get everyone around the campfire. After the meal, pull out the marshmallows for s’mores.
Great to wrap meat or veggies in and place directly on the grill. I love doing this and putting canola oil and seasonings in the grill packet. My guests have raved about the flavoring and moistness in the meat or fish I serve.
